The “interesting” lambda variant appears in the Philippines

The Philippine Department of Health announced on Sunday that the first case of the coronavirus Lambda in the country has been detected, with over 30 thousand deaths.

The first case of the Lambda strain is a 35-year-old female, who has since recovered, the ministry said, adding that it is still investigating whether the patient is a Filipino woman returning from abroad.

The Lambda, which was first discovered in Peru in August 2020, was classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a “breed that should be of interest”.

The country’s death toll from the virus rose by 270 on Sunday to 30,000 and 340. The number of new cases has increased by 14,000 and 749, bringing the total to more than 74.1 million.
