Climate Change Performance Index 2022: Morocco Ranks 8th

The Kingdom of Morocco has been ranked 8th in the world, in the 2022 Climate Performance Index.

The index is periodically produced by a group of NGOs, German Watch, the International Climate Action Network, and the German Institute for the New Climate.

The Kingdom of Morocco came eighth after Denmark, Sweden, Norway and the United Kingdom.

Morocco is in the bright green category, which means a high will, both at the community and political level, to protect the climate.

The Kingdom achieved this rank after obtaining a total score of 71.64. Nevertheless, Morocco fell by one position in the current classification compared with the 2012 classification, which had a total point balance of 67.59.

Morocco, on the other hand, has maintained positive rates in the sub-indices formed for this annual international report.

The report commended the high performance of the Kingdom of Morocco in environmental protection, given its continued occupation of one of the top 10 centers.

It pointed to the availability of more renewable energy production in the country, which is what the Moroccan solar energy plan aims to achieve.

The international index is based on 14 sub-indicators in four categories; greenhouse gas emissions with a high rate (12th worldwide), renewable energy with average performance (29th), high-performance energy use (7th) and a high-rated climate policy (6th).

The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) monitors States’ policies and efforts in the area of climate protection and aims to apply political pressure on countries that are not sufficiently involved in the development of policies and actions on climate protection, given the risks posed by growing climate change.
