Sudan Prime Minister Hamdok intends to resign soon
Sources close to Sudanese Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok said yesterday that he intends to resign his position.
The sources added that Hamdok informed a group of nationalist figures and intellectuals who met with him that he intends to resign from his position, according to Reuters.
The group called on Hamdok to reverse his decision, but he insisted on taking this step in the coming hours, it said.
Hamdok’s statements came a day before scheduled protests against the coup d’état carried out by military leaders on October 25, and the agreement they announced on November 21 to return Hamdok, who was under house arrest, to his position.
Hundreds of thousands marched towards the presidential palace earlier this week, rejecting the military rule and Hamdok’s decision to return to office. Hamdok said he returned to preserve the gains made during the transition process and to put an end to the bloodshed.
47 people have died in the crackdown on protests against military rule. The UN said today it had received reports of individual or mass rape of 13 women and girls.
Hamdok said in a statement earlier this week: The Sudan is nearing the brink, due to political intransigence and the lack of consensus on a new political agreement.
