A statue of Shakira was unveiled on Tuesday in her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia

The statue, standing 6.5 meters tall and made of bronze and aluminum, depicts the famous Colombian singer with intertwined arms above her head, exposed abdomen, and a tilted waist representing her famous hip movement. The statue captures Shakira performing one of her distinctive dance moves, wearing a brown bralette and a long skirt of the same color.

The inscription on the statue’s base reads, “Hips don’t lie, unparalleled talent, a voice that touches the masses.” The unveiling took place at a public event on the banks of the Magdalena River in Barranquilla, with the presence of Shakira‘s parents, William Mebarak and Nidia Ripoll.

Shakira expressed her gratitude on the X platform, saying, “Thanks to sculptor Yanu Marques and the students of the local art school for this representation of the immense artistic talent of my people,” according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The 46-year-old international star made a comeback in her musical career this year with the song “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” addressing her difficult separation from former football player Gerard Piqué. The song, produced in collaboration with Argentine record producer Bizarrap, immediately achieved global success and won the Latin Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 2023.

Shakira also made headlines due to her legal troubles in Spain, where she was fined over 7 million euros in November for tax evasion. She remains the subject of several legal pursuits within the same framework.
