Amber Heard officially ordered to pay Johnny Depp $10 million
The judge in the libel trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard on Friday formalized the jury’s decision to condemn the actress to pay 10 million to her ex-husband, and this one to pay her 2 million dollars.
It is now official, Amber Heard will have to pay 10.35 million dollars to Johnny Depp, who will have to pay him 2 million dollars. Judge Penney Azcarate, who officiated during the defamation lawsuit that the two actors had brought, thus formalized the jury’s decision with a written order, reports the American press.
This was a simple formality, after the verdict of the jury, announced on June 1, in a rather chaotic way, after six weeks of a trial which turned into a great unpacking. The judge finalized the verdict during a brief hearing in Fairfax, where the trial was held, which neither Amber Heard nor Johnny Depp attended.
Thirty days to file an appeal
The case will now be transferred to the Virginia Court of Appeals, and both parties will then have 30 days to file an appeal.
Jurors Order Amber Heard to Pay Ex-Husband $15 Million in Damages – reduced to $10.35 million due to a local law capping punitive damages.
Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard for defamation over a column published by the Washington post in 2018. She declared to be “a public figure representing domestic violence”, without naming the actor. The star of Pirates of the Caribbean demanded 50 million dollars in damages, believing that this platform had destroyed his career and his reputation.
Johnny Depp, also sentenced for defamation against his ex-wife, was ordered to pay him “only” 2 million dollars.
The day after the verdict, Amber Heard’s lawyer had indicated that the actress could “absolutely not” pay 10 million in damages to Johnny Depp. Several avenues were then discussed, including the garnishment of wages and the declaration of personal bankruptcy.
