China: Surge in AI Use to Predict Future Child’s Appearance
A service using artificial intelligence to predict the facial features of unborn babies has become very popular among parents in China.
This service is promoted on e-commerce platforms, where providers claim it allows “predicting the future baby’s face from 4D ultrasound images,” contributing to its widespread adoption.
Thousands of customers have spent between $1.4 and $4.2 on this service on the popular Chinese e-commerce platform “Taobao,” owned by the company “Alibaba.”
Service providers claim that artificial intelligence can create an image of a newborn’s face using one or more ultrasound images.
The ultrasound exam is conducted between the 18th and 22nd weeks of pregnancy to check the fetus’s health and sometimes to determine its gender. Some parents use this exam to know the future child’s features.
A “Taobao” store reported using the AI program “Midjourney” to create the images. After entering ultrasound images and some textual information, the program generates four images for customers to choose from.
However, the accuracy and clarity of AI-generated images are not guaranteed. The results are random and change based on the entered textual information, and service providers cannot guarantee their accuracy, claiming that the images resemble “80 to 90%” of ultrasound images. Some stores even offer a service to predict children’s features up to the age of five.
Critics point out that the idea is not accurate because ultrasound scans do not represent the child’s features accurately after birth.

The images from the exam are composites of multiple captures and can be blurry if the fetus moves during the image capture. Many parents view this service as entertaining or a good luck charm rather than a precise scientific process.
