Consecutive Security Successes: Tunisia Arrests 20 Terrorists since the Start of 2025

Tunisian authorities are continuing their efforts to arrest a significant number of terrorists convicted of belonging to terrorist organizations in various provinces.

According to different reports from the General Directorate of the National Guard, its forces have arrested more than 20 terrorists this January, accused of being part of a terrorist organization.

Tunisia faces terrorist groups entrenched in the western highlands of the country, including “Jund Al-Khilafa,” loyal to the terrorist organization “ISIS,” and “Okba Ibn Nafi,” affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

Tunisia has raised its security alert level by strengthening border security to prevent terrorist operations or the return of Tunisian terrorists currently in Syria to the country.

On Tuesday, the spokesperson for the General Directorate of the National Guard (gendarmerie), Brigadier General Houssem Eddine Jebabli, stated in media interviews that the National Guard, particularly the specialized unit and the anti-terrorism directorate, had achieved successes in combating terrorists since last year and at the start of this year while securing the country’s borders.

He clarified that a group of terrorists, internationally wanted and part of their respective countries’ agencies, was recently arrested alive.

He also noted that National Guard units had neutralized terrorists, some of whom had been hiding in the mountains since 1990, emphasizing that the units follow a strategy of capturing terrorists alive to bring them to justice.

The general added: “The Tunisian experience, through the management of the specialized unit (intelligence services) and information operations, is a pioneering one in combating terrorism. Terrorists have been neutralized by the specialized units as a result of intelligence work.”

Furthermore, Jebabli revealed that in 2024, more than 30 minors were recruited via social media to join terrorist groups.

He said: “These networks are heavily relied upon to recruit young people, in addition to the books and articles they use to attract children.” He also noted that several investigations have been opened in this regard.

On December 31, Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed decided to extend the state of emergency in the country for one month, until the end of January 2025.
