Egypt: Cancellation of a Concert by an International Star near the Pyramids due to ‘Strange Rituals’
The Egyptian Musicians Syndicate announced on Tuesday the cancellation of a concert by the American artist Travis Scott, which was scheduled to take place near the historical Pyramids area, citing the reason as “strange rituals” performed on stage.
In detail, the official spokesperson of the Musicians Syndicate, Mohamed Abdullah, stated in a statement that the syndicate “affirms that it is the authority responsible for issuing permits for music and singing concerts in Egypt, in coordination with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture represented by the Censorship of Artistic Works Authority and the Ministry of Labor, emphasizing the necessity of considering security aspects and approvals from relevant authorities as a top priority in organizing concerts, to ensure the safety and protection of the audience.”
He added, “Undoubtedly, in recent months, the General Syndicate has welcomed all forms of arts and concerts, but it has set conditions and regulations to ensure that the customs and traditions of the Egyptian people are not violated,” as reported by Al-Ahram newspaper.
The Musicians Syndicate in Egypt clarified that its decision came “after reviewing the opinions of users on social media and receiving reports to the Syndicate and its General Chairman and Board of Directors, which included authenticated photos and information about the strange rituals performed by this concert’s star (Travis Scott) during his performance, using his tools to conduct rituals that contradict our authentic social values and traditions.”
They continued, “As the General Syndicate is part of this beloved country’s fabric, working towards its stability and security and refusing to tamper with the community’s values, Egyptian and Arab customs and traditions (…) the General Chairman and the Board of Directors have decided to cancel the license issued for organizing this type of concert, which is inconsistent with the cultural identity of the Egyptian people.”
