Egypt: Official Campaign against “Fake” Accounts of Public Figures
The Supreme Council for Media Regulation in Egypt has launched a campaign aimed at identifying “fake” pages and accounts impersonating artists and public figures on social media platforms.
This governmental campaign comes in response to numerous artists facing various rumors due to identity theft through fake pages on social media.
The Council urged celebrities and public figures who notice pages or accounts using their names without authorization to report these fraudulent accounts in order to “create public awareness that helps track and hold impostors accountable.”
The Council has already identified fake pages and accounts impersonating celebrities, including Amr Diab, Ahmed Ezz, and Ramez Galal.
The Council’s chairman, journalist Karam Gabr, emphasized the need for an effective mechanism to address rumors and fake pages that impersonate public figures and major entities.
He also announced the upcoming launch of a website named “Emsek Mozayaf“ (Catch the Fake), aimed at combating false news and misleading content circulating online.
