Egypt: Rejection of Facebook Friendship Request Leads to Assault with Sharp Weapon
In an unusual incident, a student in the College of Commerce attacked a fellow student in the College of Engineering, stabbing him with a sharp weapon because the latter had rejected his friend request on the social media site Facebook.
The incident took place in the village of “Moscad Wassif” in Egypt, near the city of “Zefta” in the Gharbia province. It began when authorities received a report stating that the victim had arrived at the general hospital of the city, suffering from severe cutting wounds to the face and neck, with heavy bleeding.
It turned out that the student had been viciously attacked with a sharp weapon, and doctors had to intervene urgently to stop the bleeding and treat the wounds by suturing the face and neck with about 115 stitches.
Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the engineering student had received a friend request from a fellow student in the College of Commerce, which he had not accepted and even deleted. The requester considered this as a personal insult.
When the victim confronted the aggressor, the latter strongly reprimanded him, but the former assured him that he did not know him and thus would not accept his friendship. The perpetrator then waited for him at the entrance of the village as he was on his way to his college and committed his crime.
A report was drawn up on the incident, and the prosecution opened an investigation, while security authorities are intensifying their efforts to quickly apprehend the culprit.
