According to a study conducted by a team from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and published by the British newspaper Daily Mail, this hidden fat may contribute to chronic inflammation and insulin resistance, leading to damage in the microvessels that supply blood to the heart.

Shocking Findings
The study included 669 participants who underwent comprehensive examinations to analyze heart function using computed tomography techniques. These tests aimed to determine the quantity and proportion of fat hidden within the muscles relative to the total muscle and fat mass in their bodies.
The results showed that a 1% increase in muscle fat is associated with a 2% increase in the risk of microvascular damage and a 7% increase in the risk of severe heart diseases. These effects occur regardless of body weight or BMI, highlighting the importance of more precise body composition analysis to assess heart disease risks.
Experts’ Views
Professor Vivianai Taketi, the lead author of the study, stated: “Hidden fat within the muscles is a major factor in chronic inflammation and insulin resistance, which directly damages blood vessels, including those that supply the heart muscle.”
