Gargash: The United Arab Emirates Human Rights Register is « internationally recognized»

Anwar Mohammed Gargash, the diplomatic advisor to the President of the United Arab Emirates, said that the UAE’s winning membership in the Human Rights Council at the United Nations is based on an internationally recognized human rights record.

Gargash tweeted that the UAE’s victory was also based on “successful experience in many areas such as women empowerment, tolerance, and labor rights.”

The UAE was able to win a seat on the UN Human Rights Council from 2022 to 2024 in elections that included 18 new countries.

The UAE’s historic membership in the UN Security Council was won by 180 out of 193 members.

The UAE’s victory is the culmination of a long march that was decorated with many achievements at home and abroad, including “Human First”.

The initiatives of the United Arab Emirates are derived from its cultural heritage, its Constitution, which guarantees civil liberties for all, and its legislative system, which promotes the principles of justice, equality and tolerance, respect for rights, and support for humanitarian and relief work in line with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The elections were held by accredited regional groups, this time the number of candidates equaling the number of open seats on the Human Rights Council.

To fill the five vacant seats, the Asia-Pacific Group of States nominated India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

While the African Group nominated: Somalia, Cameroon, Benin, Eritrea and The Gambia also occupy the five vacant seats.

Aside from those States, Montenegro and Lithuania have applied for the two vacant seats in the Group of Eastern European States.

The Group of Latin American and Caribbean States, Paraguay, Honduras and Argentina have applied for the three vacant seats.

The United States, Finland and Luxembourg, for their part, ran for the three vacant seats, as did the Western European and Other Group.
