Iran Rejects U.S. Accusations of Malicious Cyber Activity

Tehran accuses Washington of using seeking to deflect attention from the international wave of criticism regarding its policies of unlimited support for Israeli crimes

Iran condemned on Wednesday the U.S. accusations regarding its involvement in malicious cyber activities allegedly conducted on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, prompting Washington to impose a new set of sanctions against two Iranian companies and individuals.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, stated that Iran “categorically and in detail rejects the U.S. government’s allegations about the involvement of some Iranians and companies in electronic attacks.”

Washington is accused of attempting to “divert attention from the international wave of criticism regarding its policies of unlimited support for war crimes and genocide committed by the Zionist entity in the Gaza Strip.”

On Tuesday, the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against four individuals and two companies, also stating that four individuals had been charged for their role in “cyber activities targeting U.S. entities.”

The ministry’s statement mentioned that “these entities targeted over 12 American companies and government entities with cyber operations, including phishing attacks and the use of malicious software” on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

In response, U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, in a statement on this decision, asserted that the department had made the decision to impose sanctions simultaneously with receiving the indictment against the four individuals.

Miller emphasized that the cyber leadership of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps is “an Iranian government institution responsible for cyber attacks against institutions in the United States and other countries.”

He stated that the United States would continue to “expose harmful cyber actions and punish those responsible,” adding that they “will not tolerate cyber attacks targeting national companies.”

The United States, along with Britain and the European Union, recently imposed new sanctions on Iran following its unprecedented attack on Israel on the night of April 13-14 in response to the airstrike that destroyed its consulate in Damascus.
