Iraqi parliament speaker endorses al-Kadhimi initiative: ‘Dialog is the solution’

Iraqi parliament speaker Mohamed Al-Halbousi said he supports Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi’s initiative to “find a solution formula” for events in the country.

Al-Halbousi’s support for the Iraqi prime minister’s initiative was expressed in a tweet on Tuesday.

The Iraqi Civil Defense managed to control a fire at the parliament guesthouse in the Green Zone.

On Monday, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi warned of “serious consequences” for the repercussions of the current political crisis in Iraq if “wise people intervene”.

Al-Kadhimi also called on protesters to vacate government buildings, addressing them: “Your organization and your calm are appreciated”.

He also called on political forces to “assume their national and legal responsibility”, noting that “the caretaker government has performed all its duties despite exceeding the time limit set by the constitutional timeframe for the formation of a new government; which is a constitutional violation”.

On Monday afternoon, the capital Baghdad witnessed a demonstration by supporters of the coordination framework, which includes a group of Shiite parties close to Iran, at the suspension bridge leading to the Green Zone. The demonstration was in response to the open sit-in of Sadrist supporters in the parliament and Al-Sadr’s call for changing the political system.
