Japan Earthquake.. New Rise in Casualty Toll

The casualty toll from the earthquake that struck central Japan on Monday has risen to 62, according to authorities on Wednesday.

An official in the Ishikawa prefecture, who declined to disclose his name, stated to the Agence France-Presse (AFP) that “the death toll has reached 62 people,” with over 300 reported injuries, including 20 considered serious.

The previous official toll had indicated the death of at least 50 people in this earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5, causing extensive destruction.

Japan consistently experiences seismic activity due to its location above the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean, an area known for increasing seismic activity.

Central Japan experienced 155 earthquakes between 16:00 on Monday (07:00 GMT Monday) and 09:00 on Tuesday (00:00 GMT Tuesday), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The earthquake, also felt by residents in Tokyo, located 320 kilometers away from Noto, caused significant material damage and tsunami waves on Monday along the Sea of Japan coast. However, the waves were relatively low, not exceeding a height of 1.2 meters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency officially lifted the tsunami warning on Tuesday morning.
