Reconnaissance… Erdogan’s popularity and his alliance continue to collapse
Opinion polls in Turkey continue to reveal the fall in popularity of the ruling regime and its coalition, as opposed to the rise in opposition shares.
The website of the Turkish opposition newspaper Arti Greçek reported yesterday, Friday, and was followed by “Al-Ain News”, that the “Aksawi” Center for Studies and Research conducted a new opinion poll adding to previous surveys indicating the continued decline in the popularity of President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his regime.
According to the results, the “public” alliance, made up of the ruling Justice and Development Party and the opposition Nationalist Movement, lost many votes to the crisis in the country, especially economic ones, in addition to the recent forest fires and floods that have had a significant impact on the country.
This is in addition to the targeted blow the regime received after the Mafia leader, Sedat Peker, revealed crimes and scandals allegedly involving the regime.
The results also pointed to the superiority of the opposition Umma Alliance, which is made up of several opposition parties, most notably the Republican People, the leader of the opposition, and the Good Party, over the ruling Jamhouri Coalition.
The poll asked participants, “If the elections are held this Sunday, which party will you vote for?” The poll said 30.6% for the Justice and Development Party, 28.7% for the Republican People’s Party, 13.3% for the Good Party, 9.3% for the Kurdish Democratic People’s Party, and 8.0% for the Nationalist Movement.
2.6% for the Democracy and Progress Party, 1.9% for the Future Party, 0.8% for the Happiness Party, and 4.8% for other parties.
According to these results, the percentage of the “Jamhour” alliance reached 38.6%, and the “Ummah” alliance reached 42%, with the latter leading by more than 3 full points.
In the 2018 general election, the Jamhouri Alliance won 53.7% of the votes. In the same election, the Justice and Development Party’s vote alone was 42.6%, which means that the ruling party and its coalition have seen a marked decline.
Crises and scandals
The poll comes as part of a series of surveys that show results from time to time and reveal a general decline in the popularity of Erdogan and his ruling party, as well as his ally the opposition Nationalist Movement Party, due to the deteriorating situation in the country on all levels, especially economic ones, resulting from the adoption of ineffective policies to eliminate crises.
These developments also come as Turks have grown increasingly suspicious about the government’s handling of organized crime gangs, following recent revelations by Sedat Peker, the country’s mafia leader, of current and former officials, including interior ministers.
They also come on the heels of fires and floods that have hit many states in the north and south, resulting in significant material and human losses.
Erdogan’s popularity is eroding in the face of a financial, monetary, and economic crisis that is the most complex Turkey is currently facing, as the domestic lira has collapsed to historic levels in the past two years, resulting in a resounding decline in indicators and several economic sectors.
The opposition, as well as the Turkish street, blame the regime, represented by Erdogan, for this deterioration as a result of its useless policies.
Turkey’s general election is scheduled for 2023, but observers expect it to be held before then because of the country’s difficult economic and political situation.
