Report on the Brotherhood threat sparks divisions within the French government and reveals Macron’s plan to counter the group

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his frustration during a meeting of the French Defense Council following the leak of a report on the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood in France, sharply criticizing his ministers.

According to Politico, government sources revealed that Macron accused his ministers of failing to provide adequate solutions to confront the “threat” posed by the Muslim Brotherhood.

The report was initially scheduled for release last Wednesday, but Macron’s office delayed its publication after the report was leaked to right-leaning media outlets, causing embarrassment for the presidency.

The leak is suspected to have come from Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, whose popularity has surged since joining Macron’s government last September, with early polls suggesting he could be a serious contender in the 2027 presidential election.

Retailleau, recently elected leader of the right-wing Republicans party, has repeatedly discussed the report’s findings in interviews with French media, accusing the Brotherhood of attempting to push French society toward the implementation of Sharia law.

According to the leaked report, the Muslim Brotherhood is accused of advancing a radical agenda throughout France and Europe and is described as a “threat to national cohesion” in France.

France-Presse reported that President Macron has outlined several measures to counter the Brotherhood’s influence, including tight supervision of private schools and associations suspected of links to extremist Islamist currents, as well as banning foreign funding for mosques and Islamic associations, particularly from sources believed to support radical ideologies.

Macron has decided to close institutions promoting discourse contrary to republican values and supports a “French Islam” by enforcing a “Republican Values Charter” on Islamic organizations.

Among the proposed measures is a ban on wearing the hijab for girls under 15 in public spaces, as part of the effort to combat what is termed “Islamic separatism.”
