Study Reveals the Optimal Frequency for Washing Hair


Washing hair is a daily habit that varies from person to person, depending on hair type, texture, and scalp condition. But what is the ideal number of times to wash your hair per week? Is frequent washing beneficial, or can it harm the hair?

A recent British study investigated hair washing habits, revealing that Britons wash their hair on average every 2 to 3 days. Experts believe this relatively high frequency could contribute to issues such as dandruff and hair loss.

In this context, specialists provide various recommendations for hair care based on hair type to avoid potential damage and achieve the best results.

For Women

For women, the frequency of washing depends on the type of shampoo used, hair type, and scalp condition.

Abbas Kanani, a hair hygiene expert at Chemist Click, explains: “Most people can go 2 to 3 days without washing their hair. However, if your scalp produces excess oil, you may need to wash your hair every 1 to 2 days. Those with fine or straight hair are more prone to oily hair.”

Fine, straight hair has a smooth texture, making it easier for oil to spread along the strands. On the other hand, afro hair should be washed less frequently, about once or twice a week, as it is more prone to damage from dryness. Oils are essential for maintaining softness and curl definition in afro hair.

Experts also advise against using shampoo every time. Occasionally, washing hair with just water can help reduce damage.

For Men

For men, the expert at Chemist Click recommends washing hair two to four times a week while cautioning against overuse of hair products, which can clog pores and reduce the natural oil production of the scalp. A lack of oil can lead to dryness and hair damage.

Abbas Kanani adds: “Frequent shampooing is unlikely to contribute to baldness.”

However, excessive washing may worsen dandruff issues. Conversely, insufficient washing can cause scalp itching, which can also exacerbate dandruff.

Kanani continues: “My advice is to use a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo two to three times a week and wash hair with water two to three times a week to get rid of dandruff.”
