Suffering and Uncertainty: The Joy of ESuffering and Uncertainty: The Joy of Eid al-Adha Disappears in Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflictid al-Adha Disappears in Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflict

The joy of the Eid celebration is overshadowed by the ugly face of war in Sudan, a year after the crisis began. Sudanese people welcome this festive occasion to the sounds of battles, amidst heightened security, curfews, the spread of epidemics in some states, and a humanitarian crisis described as catastrophic.

Uncertain Situation

An uncertain situation persists in some cities, with ongoing clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in various areas in western Sennar and southern Al Jazirah state in central Sudan, according to Sudan Tribune. With UN organizations announcing that more than half of the country’s population needs aid and relief, the suffering is evident to all, worsening as Eid al-Adha approaches.

Sudan is experiencing a deep humanitarian crisis, with the primary goal being to achieve stability and end the suffering of millions of Sudanese people.

Difficult Suffering

Sudanese analyst and writer Othman Mirghani says: “The war in Sudan leaves no room for joy during Eid al-Adha, which comes as clashes continue in various parts of the country, while other areas are sinking under a series of crises, including hunger, service outages, and the constant worry of displacement. All signs of joy are replaced by the daily scenes of blood and fire.”

He added, “The situation today is no different from the last Eid, with the suffering of those who remain in Khartoum or have recently returned, and the displaced in other states, who are haunted by the need to secure daily necessities and the threat of war spreading to them. Meanwhile, residents of El Fasher in North Darfur hold their breath amid warnings of the war extending to the last safe area in the region.”

He noted that there have been many calls urging the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces to ceasefire during the days of Eid to allow the residents to catch their breath and address critical and urgent humanitarian cases.

In recent days, many countries and institutions have called for a humanitarian truce during Eid al-Adha, along with mobilizing international and regional support to reach negotiations that could bring stability to the state and presenting economic initiatives that could achieve stability in the country.
