“Supply and Demand”… Details of Erdogan’s letter to the Taliban
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday night that he is open to cooperating with the Taliban and still wants to secure Kabul airport.
In press statements classified as letters in light of the current situation in Afghanistan, Erdogan said he was open to cooperation with the Taliban, welcoming moderate statements made so far.
“I am still trying to maintain security at the airport in Kabul,” he said. Securing the airport in the Afghan capital is a Turkish request. A few weeks ago, the Turkish president announced that Ankara and Washington had agreed that Turkish troops would take over security of Kabul airport after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“But the Taliban’s rapid advance on the ground, all the way to control the country, Kabul, and the airport entrances last Sunday led observers to question whether Turkey could take over airport security under the new regime.”
Over the past few days, the Taliban have sent reassuring messages to the world, pledging not to harm any country from Afghan soil, maintaining good relations with the world and respecting women’s rights.
