Sweden Calls for Classifying Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a “Terrorist Organization” in Europe
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced on Sunday that his country has called on the European Union to classify the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a “terrorist organization,” following several attacks on Israeli targets in Sweden that Stockholm blames on Iran.

The Swedish intelligence agency “Säpo” had accused Iran of recruiting members of Swedish criminal gangs to carry out “acts of violence” against Israeli and other interests in Sweden, which Tehran denied.
Kristersson stated to the daily newspaper Expressen: “We want Sweden to seriously address, along with other EU countries, the incredibly problematic link between the IRGC and its destructive role in the Middle East, as well as its growing actions in several European countries, including Sweden.”

Last week, the Lithuanian parliament passed a resolution classifying the IRGC as a terrorist organization.
Conservative MP Emmanuelis Zingeris, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee, stated at a press conference: “We were the first to announce this among the EU parliaments (…). We recognize the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.”

The resolution calls on the European Union to follow the lead of the United States and Canada by adding the IRGC to the bloc’s list of terrorist organizations.
Many Israeli interests have been targeted in recent months in Sweden.
In early October, the Israeli embassy was shot at, resulting in no injuries.
Other incidents occurred near the embassy since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023. In February, a grenade was found near the building, which the Israeli ambassador described as an attempted attack.
