The Muslim Brotherhood Authorities Worsen the Suffering of Taiz Residents in Yemen… What’s the Story?

The water crisis in the city of Taiz has worsened to an unprecedented level due to the continued failure of the local authority affiliated with the Al-Islah Party, the Yemeni branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, to deliver the government water project to most neighborhoods of the city. This is happening amid a suspicious silence from the concerned authorities and a clear inability to address one of the most basic rights of the citizens.

According to Al-Montasaf website, Taiz residents complain of a complete absence of public water in most areas, with water only being pumped to select neighborhoods. Meanwhile, the city is experiencing a suffocating water crisis, along with a dramatic surge in water truck (tanker) prices in recent days.

Activists on social media have called for the immediate implementation of the water project and its distribution across all areas according to a regular weekly or monthly schedule, instead of the current selective distribution system, which they see as unjustified discrimination that deepens the suffering of the majority of residents.

They also criticized the silence of the local authority — the Al-Islah Party — and its persistent negligence. They pointed out that the party’s failure in the electricity sector for years, which forced citizens to rely on expensive commercial electricity, is now repeating itself with the water crisis. Citizens are now compelled to buy water from private reservoirs at unaffordable prices.

In the same context, activists noted that the local authority and officials in the electricity and water institutions merely shift the blame, citing a lack of funding to restore electricity, and claiming that the water crisis is linked to most wells being located in Houthi-controlled areas. However, these justifications are now seen as repetitive and unconvincing by the people of Taiz, who are demanding real and alternative solutions to these escalating crises.

Residents of Taiz, who have been without government electricity for years, are now also unable to bear the cost of purchasing water amid ongoing economic decline and rising prices of goods and services.

The dual crises of electricity and water outages have sparked widespread questions and criticism among the public regarding the performance of the local authority and provincial leadership, which has remained unchanged for years.

Many citizens and activists believe the authority suffers from a complete lack of any real vision to sustainably address the essential service crises in the city of Taiz, making it directly responsible for the continued suffering of millions of residents who have been worn down by war, neglect, and administrative corruption.
