The Muslim Brotherhood blesses the appointment of Sinwar… An expert affirms it is illegitimate and contrary to the regulations of Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood
The Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan has praised the appointment of Yahya Sinwar as the head of Hamas‘ political bureau, succeeding the martyr Ismail Haniyeh, may God have mercy on his soul. However, a senior Egyptian security official and expert on Brotherhood affairs has stated that this procedure is illegitimate.
The Brotherhood claimed in a statement received by (Hafryat) that the selection of the head of its political bureau was carried out through internal consultative frameworks, despite the ongoing Zionist war against the Palestinian people.
They asserted that Sinwar’s selection underscores the movement’s strength and cohesion at all levels, the deep-rootedness of consultation within its ranks, and its commitment to the resistance project as an essential option to liberate all of Palestine from the sea to the river, despite the targeting of its leaders.
Conversely, General Adel Azb, former head of Brotherhood activities at the National Security and a witness in the espionage case against deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, explained that after Haniyeh‘s assassination, the names proposed to succeed him were divided between Khaled Meshaal, supported by the international Brotherhood organization, and Khalil al-Hayya, loyal to Iran and supported by it.
In a statement to (Al-Arabiya), he added that based on his experience in Brotherhood affairs and the group’s method of selecting its leaders across countries, the choice is made according to a specific regulation, that of the international Brotherhood organization, which mandates that the Consultative Council of the organization in the country is responsible for electing the organization’s leadership in the event of the death or resignation of the general overseer.
He continued: “The final result is then communicated to the international organization’s leadership, represented by the Global Guidance Office and the Global Consultative Council Office, and the Supreme Guide for approval.”
According to the Egyptian official, it follows that the selection of Hamas‘ leader should be made by choosing the oldest members of the movement in Palestine until elections are held and approved by the international organization. Hence, it was discussed recently that there was a direction to appoint Abu Omar Hassan, the head of the movement’s Consultative Council, to temporarily lead the movement.
He said: “That was the expectation, especially since Hamas belongs to the Brotherhood both organizationally and administratively; therefore, the new leader of the movement should be chosen according to the regulations, which did not happen. Hamas surprised everyone by appointing Sinwar, in violation of the regulations and without elections, making his appointment illegitimate.”
He added that “the surprise is that one of the provisions of the international organization’s regulations states that violating these procedures requires the establishment of a supreme court to hold accountable those who have exceeded these regulations. In this case, it applies to Sinwar and his companions who chose him in violation of the organization’s regulations.”
He also noted that some articles of Hamas‘ founding document, specifically Article 2, explicitly state that it is a branch of the Brotherhood in Palestine, as also mentioned in Hamas‘ slogan, which is the same as that of the Brotherhood. He questioned whether Sinwar’s appointment, despite violating the Brotherhood’s regulations, was blessed by the Brotherhood, or if it was done independently of the Brotherhood and its regulations, following Iranian interests.
