Uruguay: Fire in nursing home claims 10 lives

Ten elderly people were killed today, Sunday, in a fire that broke out in a nursing home in the city of Treinta y Tres, eastern Uruguay, according to authorities.

“Unfortunately, they all died,” said Pablo Benítez, spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, according to “France-Presse.”

A ministry statement explained: “The victims are eight women and two men. A 20-year-old employee managed to exit before the firefighters arrived; she is in shock but has no visible injuries.”

The incident occurred around 6:00 AM (09:00 GMT) in the nursing home, located in a six-room house in the city center. An investigation has been opened to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

The ministry’s statement added that “when the firefighters arrived, they saw thick smoke while the main entrance door was closed, and there was a wall with bars. After managing to enter, they saw the fire raging in the living room and the smoke spreading to other rooms.”

The ministry’s statement also noted that despite the efforts of the medical staff at the home, seven of the residents died on site “as a result of smoke inhalation” and “three others, in critical condition, were transported to a local hospital where they later died.”
