$90,000 Grant for Those Who Want to Live on the “Poetic” Islands of Ireland

The Irish government has announced a plan to increase the population of over twenty remote islands in the Atlantic Ocean by offering a grant of approximately $92,000 to those interested in moving to those islands.

These islands include Inishmore, where the film “The Banshees of Inisherin,” nominated for the 2022 Oscars, was filmed. It is one of the Aran Islands located off the western coast of Ireland.

These islands are often tourist attractions due to their rugged natural landscapes and history. However, over the past two decades, the population of these islands has dwindled, with fewer than 3,000 people now residing there, according to the new Irish government plan.

Nevertheless, the islands are important for tourism, attracting over 300,000 visitors annually, which has sparked interest in living in the “poetic” islands.

The plan indicates that “the ongoing interest of island communities, both nationally and internationally, is to maintain population levels on their islands.” “Island communities generally have an older demographic profile than the average, as many young people leave the islands to seek further education or job opportunities elsewhere.”

Here’s what you need to know about the Irish grant:

What does Ireland offer?

Ireland offers up to approximately $92,000 (€84,000) for individuals who renovate a “derelict building” on one of the islands. Those who restore a vacant property can receive up to approximately $67,000 (€60,000) for renovations, according to an official government website.

The government is now providing additional funds to the islands as part of its 10-year plan to attract more residents to move there.

How can I qualify for funding?

There are specific criteria to qualify for funding, according to the government. Among them:

The property must have been vacant for at least two years and built before 2008.

You must own the property or be in the process of purchasing it.

You must live in the house as your primary residence upon completion of the work or rent it.

You cannot be a registered company or property developer.

Can foreigners purchase properties in Ireland?

Yes, because there are no residency requirements for buying properties in Ireland, according to the government.

However, buying a property does not automatically grant you the right to reside in Ireland, as stated by the government.

You can also apply for work permits, while those interested in investing in Ireland or starting a business there may qualify for residency as well.
