Russia-Ukraine crisis: UAE calls for immediate de-escalation
The UAE Foreign Ministry called for an “immediate de-escalation and cessation of hostilities” in Ukraine.
In a statement published by the Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations entitled “The UAE’s explanation of vote in the UN Security Council”, UAE Permanent Representative Lana Nusseibeh said: “The UAE supports a halt to the escalation of violence, the resumption of dialog, and the dispatch of humanitarian aid”, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.
Nusseibeh called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, and stressed the need to protect civilians and provide humanitarian assistance.
The statement raised particular concern about the consequences for civilians in Ukraine.
Dr. Anwar Gargash, diplomatic advisor to the UAE president, said: “In the Ukrainian crisis, our priorities are to encourage all parties to adopt diplomacy and negotiate a political settlement to end this crisis”.
“From our experience in a crisis-ridden region, we see that political solutions and the creation of balances that promote security and stability are the best way to face crises”, Gargash said in several tweets.
The world is facing the difficult test and polarization imposed by the Ukrainian crisis; this threatens the foundations of the international community and increases the factors of instability.
The UAE’s position is firm on the fundamental principles of the United Nations, international law, the sovereignty of states and the rejection of military solutions, he said, noting that alignment and positioning will only lead to more violence.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry tweet, that Emirati Foreign Minister Sheik Abdullah bin Zayed will meet his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, in Moscow tomorrow, according to Russia Today.
