Gardening: what fruits and vegetables to plant together in the vegetable garden?
It’s the end of Ice Saints! There is normally no risk of frosts, I say “normally” because we will still stay connected to our favorite application to follow the weather in order to potentially protect our crops. So we’re going to be able to plant a lot of things in the vegetable garden, and when we start planting our vegetables, we often wonder what we need to plant together in order to have a good association and especially what we need to avoid planting next to each other.
Can I put my salads next to my cucumbers? Can I plant my peppers next to my sunflowers?
So yes, there are good associations in the vegetable garden, associations that will allow plants to grow better if they are grown next to each other. There are also odor combinations that will help repel parasites but there are also bad combinations that will make your plants produce less vegetables. Today, I share with you 5 associations to make in your vegetable garden in order to have better harvests!
Plant garlic, onions or tomatoes next to your carrots!
The carrot is often attacked by the carrot fly, which is attracted by the odor of the carrot. But if you plant leeks, garlic or onions next to your carrots, this famous fly will be harder to find and will leave your carrots! The tomato plays an identical role because the leaves of the tomato give off a fairly strong smell. In addition, the carrot will soften your soil and make it easier for your tomato plant to develop its root system.
The combination of corn, squash and beans!
It is one of the most widely used associations in vegetable gardens. Simply because corn will act as a guardian for your climbing beans. In addition, your green bean plants will boost the growth of your maize plant but also of your squash plant. I’ve already touched on this quickly, and I’ve advised you to plant beans next to your trees to boost your tree growth. Beans, peas, beans will capture atmospheric nitrogen and diffuse it into the soil, making the plants around them benefit. Squashes also play an important role in this association because, as you know, squashes make creepers and cover the ground. They will therefore create a natural mulch around maize and beans in order to have a higher ambient humidity.
Sow flax with your potatoes
Right now is the right time to plant your potato tubers but beware the potato has an enemy that is none other than the Colorado beetle! To recognize it, it looks like a small beetle with an orange head and a yellow and black striped body. A natural method is to plant blue flax between your rows of potatoes.
Radishes, carrots and climbing beans.
An association I particularly like in the vegetable garden. The beans will simply create an important drop shadow to allow carrots and radishes to grow in the shade of their foliage. At the time of planting carrots, I mix the carrot seeds with the radish seeds, I then sow by making furrows. The radishes will come out in 18 days and instead of clearing the carrots, I simply remove the radishes to leave room for the carrots.
What to plant with your strawberries?
And finally, I like to plant turnips or even dwarf beans in the middle of my strawberry trees. The beans will boost my strawberry trees with their nitrogen supply. Turnips have anti-fungal properties and will protect your strawberry plants from gray rot!
