Latest Developments on the Syrian Scene

The Syrian newspaper Al-Watan reported early this Sunday that an airstrike targeted the central headquarters of “Jabhat al-Nusra” (known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham) in Idlib, where its leader, Abu Mohammad al-Joulani, was allegedly present.

According to exclusive sources cited by Al-Watan, the so-called “security bureau” of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham enforced a strict security perimeter around the destroyed headquarters, prohibiting even members of the group and civilians from approaching.

The newspaper also noted that heavy airstrikes carried out by Syrian and Russian aircraft targeted al-Nusra terrorists’ supply lines in the Sahl al-Ghab area in the countryside of Hama, central Syria.

Earlier, Al-Watan had published footage showing the arrival of Syrian army reinforcements to advanced positions in Hama.

In a single statement, the Syrian regime confirmed that its forces had not withdrawn from their positions in Hama. Meanwhile, media reports and videos shared on social media showed opposition forces advancing dozens of kilometers into Syrian territory, destroying checkpoints and bases of Iranian forces and militias funded by them.

Today, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to visit Damascus and Ankara to assess the situation in Syria and attempt to de-escalate tensions.

Meanwhile, Syria’s official news agency SANA, which refrained from covering these developments, reported that President Bashar al-Assad discussed the latest events and joint cooperation against terrorism with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. Al-Sudani expressed Iraq’s readiness to provide full support to Syria in combating terrorism in all its forms.

The Syrian armed forces stated that armed terrorist organizations were spreading false information attributed to the Syrian Army’s General Command. They affirmed that they continue to fulfill their national duty in combating these terrorist organizations across various regions.

The army urged citizens not to believe rumors and lies about the field situation or anything affecting the military leadership, encouraging them to follow news via national media.

The army also dismissed claims circulating on pages affiliated with armed terrorist groups that they had entered towns in northern Hama’s countryside.

Yesterday, armed factions infiltrated certain areas and declared full control of the city of Aleppo, imposing a nighttime curfew within its neighborhoods.

These factions announced that Aleppo would now be administratively governed by what is known as the Salvation Government, led by al-Joulani and operating in Idlib and its surrounding countryside.
