On April 23, 2025, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of the Australian Army celebrated a key milestone in its modernization and structural reform efforts with the official launch of (Squadron D) during a ceremony held at the Lavarack Barracks in Townsville, Queensland. This newly created squadron is the first and only unit in the Australian Defence Forces to operate the M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams main battle tank, currently the most advanced and deadly armored vehicle in the Australian army.
This development follows a historic foreign military sales agreement signed in January 2022 between Australia and the United States. According to the report, this deal “forms a cornerstone of Australia’s broader strategy to modernize its heavy armor capabilities and better align its defense infrastructure with the growing operational demands in the Indo-Pacific region.”
The “M1 Abrams” tank was designed by Chrysler Defense (now General Dynamics Land Systems) between 1972 and 1976 and was officially brought into operational service with the U.S. Army in 1980. It first proved its worth dramatically during the Gulf War in 1991, also known as Operation “Desert Storm,” where it completely decimated the Soviet-made “T-55,” “T-62,” and “T-72” main battle tanks of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s forces.

Although tanks are now more vulnerable than ever due to the proliferation of lethal drones and advanced anti-tank weapons, particularly in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the “Abrams” continues to provide valuable service to the Ukrainian army.
The “SEPv3” system enhances older Abrams tank versions, including an independent thermal sighting system that allows real combat capability by enabling target identification and engagement while on the move. It also integrates the Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS) system, which provides a remotely controlled version of the M2 “Ma Deuce” .50 caliber machine gun, significantly enhancing crew survivability and firepower.
