Western Sanctions Threats on Israel Rattle Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday lashed out at the leaders of France, the United Kingdom, and Canada, who condemned Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza. Netanyahu accused them of effectively granting Hamas a “major reward” amid mounting international criticism, even from traditional allies.

October 7 Losses Extend Beyond the Battlefield… Widespread Calls for Netanyahu’s Resignation
In an official statement, Netanyahu declared: “By demanding that Israel end a defensive war for our survival — before eliminating Hamas terrorists at our borders — and by calling for a Palestinian state, the leaders of London, Ottawa, and Paris are granting a huge prize to the genocidal attack against Israel on October 7, while encouraging further atrocities.”
This was in reference to the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack that sparked the ongoing war in Gaza.
On Monday, the leaders of the UK, France, and Canada threatened to impose targeted sanctions on Israel unless it halts its military operations in Gaza and lifts restrictions on humanitarian aid. This move increases pressure on Netanyahu, whose diplomatic standing is increasingly strained.

The joint announcement followed the launch of a new Israeli military operation on Friday, and Netanyahu’s earlier statement that Israel would assume full control over the Gaza Strip. International experts have already warned of an impending famine in the territory.
In a joint statement published by the UK government, the three nations stated: “The Israeli government’s obstruction of basic humanitarian aid to civilians is unacceptable and violates international humanitarian law.”
They added: “We oppose any attempt to expand settlements in the West Bank… and will not hesitate to take further actions, including imposing targeted sanctions.”

In response, Netanyahu reiterated that these governments were offering Hamas a reward, stating that Israel would defend itself with just means until total victory is achieved. He also stressed that the war would not end until all remaining hostages are freed and Gaza is fully demilitarized.
Since early March, Israel has blocked the entry of medical supplies, food, and fuel into Gaza, in an effort to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages taken during the October 7 assault on southern Israeli communities.
The three Western leaders noted in their joint statement: “We have always supported Israel’s right to defend its people against terrorism. But this escalation is completely disproportionate.”

The Palestinian movement Hamas welcomed the joint statement, calling it an “important step in the right direction” toward restoring international law and justice.
