Massive Russian Attack on Ukraine and NATO Alert in Poland

Ukraine announced on Saturday that Russia had launched a large-scale missile and drone offensive, prompting NATO forces in Poland to go on high alert.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia carried out a massive overnight assault with drones and missiles, killing three people and injuring dozens.

In a statement posted on Telegram, Zelensky reported that Russia had launched about 580 drones and 40 missiles, targeting Ukrainian infrastructure, civilian production facilities, and residential areas across the country.

He declared: “Ukraine endured a massive Russian attack throughout the night. Each strike of this kind is not a military necessity but rather a deliberate Russian strategy to terrorize civilians and destroy our infrastructure.”

According to him, in the central city of Dnipro, a missile loaded with cluster munitions struck a residential building.

Local officials confirmed that one person was killed and at least 26 were injured in Dnipro.
Images posted on Telegram showed a damaged apartment block with a destroyed roof, shattered windows, civilians receiving medical aid, and rescue workers operating at the scene.

Authorities also reported two additional deaths in the northern Chernihiv region and the western Khmelnytskyi region.

It appears that Russia has changed its approach to air strikes, now launching swarms of several hundred drones in a single strike, compared to just dozens at the beginning of the war.

According to military analysts, air raid alarms lasted nearly 11 hours in some areas overnight, with Russia conducting the strikes in two successive waves.
Ukraine’s air force said it shot down 552 drones and 31 missiles.

NATO Alert in Poland

Meanwhile, Poland’s armed forces — a NATO member — announced that Polish and allied aircraft were deployed early Saturday morning to safeguard Polish airspace after Russian strikes hit western Ukraine, near the Polish border.

The Operations Command posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have been placed on the highest alert.”

At 03:40 GMT, nearly all of Ukraine was under an air raid alert following warnings from Ukraine’s air force about Russian missile and drone attacks.

Shortly after 05:00 GMT, the Polish army stated that Polish and allied air forces had ended the operation after Russian strikes on Ukraine ceased, adding that the measures were “preventive and aimed at securing the airspace in areas adjacent to the threatened region.”
