Terrorism in Mali: Al-Qaeda Targets “Dozo” Hunters with Drones

From central to southern Mali, Al-Qaeda’s siege and attacks on villages and local communities are intensifying across the West African nation.

The latest assault targeted the town of Loulouni in southern Mali, forcing hundreds of residents and villagers from surrounding areas to flee their homes.

According to security and local sources cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP), the attack was directed at traditional hunters known as “Dozo”, who often serve as community defense groups against armed militants.

A security source stated that “several Dozo hunters came under attack by extremists using drones,” triggering widespread panic and the displacement of civilians.

Since 2012, Mali has been facing a deep security crisis, fueled by violence from Al-Qaeda’s Sahel affiliate, the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), along with ISIS and other criminal organizations.

The attack on Loulouni is considered significant because it targeted local self-defense groups that were formed to confront extremist fighters, some of which rely heavily on the Dozo hunters.

A resident of the area, speaking anonymously for security reasons, reported that seven hunters were killed, including his own brother. “The attack caused widespread panic,” he added. “Hundreds of people are heading toward Sikasso or other urban centers like Kadiolo, fleeing from the surrounding areas of Loulouni.”

The JNIM claimed responsibility for the attack in a message shared on its propaganda platforms.

In addition to direct assaults, the group’s fighters have, since last September, imposed a blockade on several regions in central and southern Mali, and have attacked fuel trucks bound for the capital Bamako, severely impacting the country’s economy.

In response to the worsening situation, the United States and the United Kingdom announced two weeks ago that they were withdrawing non-essential personnel from Mali, while several embassies urged their citizens to leave the country.

The situation in Mali is becoming increasingly complex and unstable, as terrorist groups expand their reach, turning the roads leading to the capital into active frontlines.
