Satellite images reveal new developments at Renaissance Dam
A series of satellite images released by Cairo University’s Professor of Water Resources Abbas Sharaqi have revealed the rise of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
Through his Facebook page, Sharaqi explained that the pictures showed the lake’s height rising by 565 meters, about half a meter from last week. It is estimated that the quantities of rainwater and drainage from Lake Tana, which currently reaches the Renaissance Dam, are about 150 million cubic meters. Through these two openings, about 50 – 60 million cubic meters will be passed, while the rest is reserved as a result of the lifting of the concrete of the central corridor.
He noted that the rainfall would gradually increase to the dam, reaching more than 600 million cubic meters per day in August.
He continued : “The amount of water that increased this week is estimated at about 250 million cubic meters from last week, which brought the lake’s size to about 4.25 billion cubic meters, and reached 4.9 billion cubic meters last August, where the lake’s edges are lighter due to its retreat after the opening of the two gates in mid-April, which started to narrow in some areas like the one inside the white rectangle this week.”
He noted that the level of the lake will exceed what it reached last year at the beginning of next week to begin real storage for this year, although its quantity has dropped from 13.5 to less than 4 billion cubic meters, but it remains rejected by Egypt and Sudan, and the necessary measures are being taken through the Security Council.”
