Heatwaves May Increase the Risk of Infectious Diseases in Europe
Heatwaves are becoming more frequent, prolonged, and intense across Europe as a result of climate change. While their immediate consequences—such as heatstroke, dehydration, and cardiovascular complications—are well recognized, researchers are increasingly warning about another growing public health concern: a higher risk of infectious diseases.
Rising temperatures significantly alter the environmental conditions that influence the survival and spread of disease-causing microorganisms, insects, and animal hosts. Warmer climates promote the growth and expansion of mosquitoes, ticks, and other vectors capable of transmitting viruses, bacteria, and parasites to humans.
Among the diseases receiving the greatest attention are West Nile virus infection, dengue fever, chikungunya, and, in certain regions, imported malaria. The Asian tiger mosquito, now established in several European countries, benefits from hotter summers and milder winters, allowing it to expand its geographical range and increasing the likelihood of local disease transmission.
Extreme heat also affects food and water safety. Higher temperatures accelerate the growth of harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Escherichia coli when food is not properly stored or refrigerated. As a result, foodborne illnesses tend to become more common during periods of prolonged heat.
Heatwaves are often accompanied by droughts followed by heavy rainfall, creating additional public health challenges. These extreme weather events can disrupt drinking water systems, contaminate water supplies, and facilitate the spread of waterborne diseases, particularly where sanitation infrastructure is under pressure.
Older adults, young children, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses, and individuals with weakened immune systems remain the most vulnerable. Prolonged exposure to excessive heat places significant stress on the body, potentially weakening immune defenses and increasing both the likelihood and severity of infectious diseases.
In response to these emerging threats, European public health authorities are strengthening disease surveillance systems to detect outbreaks as early as possible. Mosquito control programs, vector monitoring, laboratory surveillance, and public awareness campaigns are becoming increasingly important components of infectious disease prevention.
Health experts recommend several preventive measures, including staying well hydrated, storing food at safe temperatures, following proper food hygiene practices, removing standing water where mosquitoes breed, using insect repellents in high-risk areas, and seeking prompt medical attention if fever or unusual symptoms develop after an insect bite.
As Europe’s climate continues to change, scientists believe that diseases once largely confined to tropical and subtropical regions may become increasingly common across the continent. This evolving situation highlights the need to integrate climate adaptation into public health strategies, strengthen disease surveillance, and improve preparedness for emerging infectious threats in the years ahead.
