Al-Kadhimi: ‘We are committed to resolving political differences through diplomatic channels’

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, whose country is suffering from a severe political crisis that hinders the formation of a government, called for non-interference in Iraqi affairs.

Speaking at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Al-Kadhimi said on Friday evening, “We are committed to resolving political differences through diplomatic channels.”

He said Iraq held fair and just elections with the support of the Security Council and the United Nations, but political forces failed to form a government.

Al-Kadhimi emphasized “working to build the state and maintain its prestige on the basis of coexistence among the components of the Iraqi people with respect for pluralism.”

Referring to the spread of armed militias in his country, which undermine political decision-making and deepen the division of political forces, al-Kadhimi emphasized the importance of limiting weapons to the Iraqi state and preventing their use outside the framework of the law.

The Iraqi Prime Minister noted his country’s desire to be a source of stability in its regional environment. At the same time, he noted, “It is time for us to build the Arab region in accordance with the requirements of the current era.”

“We encourage regional cooperation and distance from crises in the region,” al-Kadhimi said.

In his speech, the Prime Minister of Iraq explained that Iraq is going through difficult climatic conditions due to the scarcity of water resources and water quotas. He noted that most of Iraq’s marshlands have become dry, causing harm to their inhabitants, and called on all countries in the region to engage in dialog to resolve water issues in accordance with international laws.

Al-Kadhimi reiterated Iraq’s firm position on the Palestinian issue, respect for the historical status of Jerusalem, and his country’s commitment to the unity of Syrian territory.

In conclusion, the Iraqi Prime Minister stressed the need to use dialog to resolve regional and international disputes.
