Death of Michelle Obama’s Mother

Marian Robinson, 86, the mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama, has passed away, according to a statement from the Obama and Robinson families.

The statement from Barack and Michelle Obama, Craig and Kelly Robinson, and their children reads: “As a sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor, and friend to many, she was loved beyond words by countless others whose lives were made better by her presence.”

The statement adds: “She passed away peacefully this morning, and for now, none of us are quite sure how to proceed without her,” as reported by CNN.

Michelle Obama wrote on social media: “My mother, Marian Robinson, was my rock, and she was always there for everything I needed. We are deeply saddened to announce her passing today.”

Barack Obama wrote on the X platform: “We will spend the rest of our time trying to live up to the example she set.”

Robinson lived with the Obama family during their time at the White House and was often seen at events with the first family, including handing out goody bags at Halloween.

Robinson, a Chicago native who returned there after the Obama family left the White House, was married to Fraser Robinson, and they had two children, Michelle and Craig. Fraser Robinson passed away in 1991 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

According to the statement, Marian Robinson was heavily involved in her children’s education.

The family recalls that Robinson taught “her children to read at an early age, sitting together and pronouncing the words on the page, giving them strength and confidence in school.”
