Hasm Resurfaces: Training Video Raises Fears of New Threat to Egypt

A video widely circulated on social media on Friday has sparked concerns and questions about the possible resurgence of the armed group “Hasm,” which is designated as a terrorist organization by Egyptian authorities and several Western countries. The promotional footage featured threats against the Egyptian state and vowed renewed armed attacks.

The video shows a group of masked men conducting military training with live ammunition at an undisclosed location, accompanied by a written statement announcing the group’s “return” and its intention to continue what it calls the “resistance.” While the footage lacks specific timestamps, its release coincides with a complex regional context, raising serious questions about its purpose, its backers, and the location of its production.
The release comes at a time of rising regional tensions, particularly with the ongoing war in Gaza and intensified Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon and the West Bank. Against this backdrop, efforts to revive internal security threats in Egypt through extremist propaganda appear to be a calculated exploitation of a region in turmoil.

According to security analysts, the timing seems intended to distract Egypt’s security forces and destabilize the domestic situation by hinting at a renewed terrorist threat. The video’s appearance aligns with repeated warnings from state agencies about attempts to target national security across multiple fronts.
Journalist Nashaat El-Dihy commented on the video during his TV program, saying that such visual messages are never random and are likely linked to efforts to reactivate dormant terrorist cells that rely on fear and political confusion to gain strategic advantage. He added, “The renewed talk of Hasm at this specific time raises serious suspicions about possible foreign support—political or logistical—for this move,” urging authorities to identify the video’s source and filming location.

U.S. Congress Moves Closer to Designating Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Organization
For his part, Maher Farghaly, a researcher specializing in Islamist movements, argued that the video carries more political symbolism than evidence of real operational capability. He suggested that its aim may be to exert media and psychological pressure to push for the release of Muslim Brotherhood leaders or to send veiled messages amid ongoing secret negotiations.
Farghaly noted that the group is aware of the difficulty of returning to armed activity in Egypt as it existed before 2019, due to preemptive strikes by security agencies and mounting regional and international restrictions on extremist groups.

Lies and Allegations: The Muslim Brotherhood Exploits the Palestinian Issue to Undermine Egypt’s Image
Hasm is one of the most prominent armed offshoots to emerge following the 2013 ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood. It announced itself in 2015 by claiming responsibility for a series of attacks targeting security officers, including the assassination of a National Security officer, a failed assassination attempt on Egypt’s former Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa, and a deadly car bombing in front of Cairo’s National Cancer Institute in 2019, which left over 20 people dead and 30 injured.
The group was designated a terrorist organization by the United States in January 2018 and the United Kingdom in December 2017, leading to asset freezes and increased scrutiny of any international financial ties to the organization.

In light of the latest video, Egypt’s national security apparatus faces a dual challenge: protecting the home front from potential infiltrations or exploitation of regional conflict zones, and managing pressures on its eastern and western borders, especially given the ongoing conflict in Gaza and tensions in Sudan and Libya.
Security sources confirmed that the relevant agencies are treating the video with the utmost seriousness and are currently working to trace its origin and analyze its technical elements for geographic or intelligence clues.

Despite the alarm generated by the video, analysts believe it does not necessarily signal a real capacity to resume attacks, but may instead be part of a psychological warfare effort by actors seeking to maintain a climate of tension or gain leverage in unresolved issues.
Nonetheless, such propaganda serves as a constant reminder that the security threat—though diminished in physical terms—remains alive through messaging and incitement, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and proactive response to any similar indicators.
