Somalia: 19 members of Al-Shabaab Fighters Killed Near Mogadishu

Al-Shabaab death toll rises after violent battles between security forces and terrorists in northern Mogadishu.

And today is Friday. Nineteen militants from the terrorist group were killed in violent clashes that broke out after Somali forces launched a surprise attack on the village of Mreyali, about 35 kilometers north of Mogadishu, where the gunmen had been gathering last week, according to Internal Security Ministry spokesman Abdul Kamil Shokri.

The Somali Ministry of Security did not address any potential security force casualties during the fighting.

Somali security forces are conducting continuous operations in the area, which was the headquarters of what the terrorist movement considers its courts to collect royalties from Mogadishu residents.

The Somali Government intends to establish security in that area to cut off the financing of terrorism.

Last Friday, Mogadishu police chief Gen. Farhan Mahmoud was killed in a security crackdown in the same area.

In recent military operations, the Somali army freed dozens of villages from the grip of the terrorist organization after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared an all-out war against terrorism to liberate all areas under its control following a bloody attack in Mogadishu at the end of August.
