The UAE between truths and lies: supporting peace and exposing smear campaigns

The United Arab Emirates has put forward a clear vision for resolving the Sudanese crisis, built on a path leading to peace and the consolidation of stability in a country torn apart by civil war for the past 28 months. Abu Dhabi has repeatedly reaffirmed this roadmap in its official statements, renewing it in various international forums—from its capital to The Hague, via Switzerland, Ethiopia, London, and New York—in support of all international efforts aimed at ending the crisis through peaceful means.

The UAE has steadfastly adhered to this roadmap, rejecting this senseless war and refusing to side with either party (the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces), while calling for them to be held accountable for their violations. It emphasizes that the Sudanese people deserve a civilian-led government. This stance has made the UAE a constant target of falsehoods spread by the Port Sudan authority (the Sudanese army government based in the city).

Periodically, this authority recycles old fabrications accusing the UAE of supporting one side in the conflict, in a repeated attempt to serve ulterior motives.

In recent days, new false accusations have emerged as part of a coordinated campaign by the so-called Port Sudan authority, claiming the UAE supports one of the warring factions.

In response, the UAE issued an official statement on Saturday, reiterating its vision for resolving the crisis through a clear roadmap—one that, in itself, is enough to refute any past or future falsehoods.

The roadmap includes:

  • An immediate ceasefire.
  • Protection of civilians.
  • Accountability for violations committed by all warring parties.
  • A civilian-led government that puts the Sudanese people’s needs above any party’s interests.

These points raise obvious questions: how could a country accused of supporting one side in the conflict publicly call for that same side to be held accountable? How could it advocate for an independent civilian government and an immediate end to the war, despite facing targeted smear campaigns?

Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to the UAE President, summarized this reasoning on X, directly addressing the two warring parties.

The UAE’s statement also exposed the malicious goals behind these accusations: undermining peace efforts, shirking responsibility, and prolonging the war.

The UAE reaffirmed its determination to work closely with partners to foster dialogue, mobilize international support, contribute to humanitarian initiatives, and lay the foundations for lasting peace in Sudan.

The statement also underscored that the Port Sudan authority is itself a party to the conflict, not recognized as the legitimate representative of Sudan, and that its allegations are unsupported by credible evidence.

Several international bodies have already dismissed these claims. On May 5, the International Court of Justice rejected Port Sudan’s case accusing the UAE of violating the Genocide Convention. Likewise, the UN Security Council’s final report of April 17, 2025, found no evidence against the UAE, highlighting instead its role in the Geneva peace talks—talks that were blocked by the Sudanese army itself.

On the humanitarian front, since the start of the crisis the UAE has provided $680 million in aid, directly assisting over two million people and aiming to reach 30 million Sudanese at risk of famine. This is part of a total of more than $3.5 billion in aid to Sudan over the past decade, including an air and sea bridge delivering 13,168 tonnes of food and medical supplies, and the establishment of three hospitals for Sudanese refugees in Chad and South Sudan.
