Trenches in Gaza: Netanyahu “Proposes” a “Pre-Rejected” Plan

If you had asked a Palestinian in Gaza about the name “Netzarim” before October 7th, they would likely recall memories associated with cross-border icons. Today, however, it has become a nightmare.

The corridor that divides Gaza into two halves since the start of the Israeli war in October last year has become a heavy burden for Palestinians in the sector. It hinders efforts for a ceasefire, with the Israeli government’s inflexible stance to remain there being rejected by Hamas.

The corridor, named after a former settlement before the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, is referred to by Palestinians as “Martyrs’ Junction” in memory of those who lost their lives during the early days of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, including the child Mohamed al-Durra and ambulance driver Bassam al-Balbisi.

New Proposal

According to the Israeli newspaper “Yediot Aharonot,” a few months ago, during one of the many discussions held by the Israeli negotiating team, an attempt was made to find a solution to the dispute over the corridor dividing Gaza between the city of Gaza in the north, the central camps, and Khan Younes and Rafah.

The newspaper reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tasked the negotiating team with presenting the outlines of his proposal for the Netzarim corridor to Cairo.

The team strongly opposed the proposal, but Netanyahu insisted on submitting it to the mediators, who rejected it outright.

Digging Trenches

The idea, previously rejected, involved digging trenches to prevent vehicle passage and redirecting them east for inspection before entering the northern part of Gaza.

This solution had been discussed before and was removed from the agenda for various reasons.

It is noted that there is no chance of this proposal being accepted by Hamas or the mediators. The negotiating team has already informed Netanyahu of their opposition.

However, the Prime Minister insisted on presenting it to the mediators, who rejected it categorically, as expected.
