World Day for the Eradication of Poverty: 575 Million People at Risk

World Day for the Eradication of Poverty falls on October 17th, providing an opportunity to promote understanding and dialogue between people living in poverty and society.

The theme for World Day for the Eradication of Poverty in 2023 is “Decent Work and Social Protection: Dignity at Work for Everyone.” It is based on direct testimonies revealing that those trapped in extreme poverty often work long and exhausting hours in hazardous and unregulated conditions but still cannot earn sufficient income to adequately support themselves and their families.

This year’s theme calls for everyone to have access to decent work and social protection as a means to support human dignity for all people and emphasizes that decent work should empower individuals, provide fair wages, safe working conditions, and fundamentally recognize the inherent and human value of all workers.

According to the United Nations, “poverty is not just an economic issue but a multidimensional phenomenon that includes a lack of income and basic capabilities to live with dignity.”

It mentions that people living in poverty experience various interconnected deprivations, including hazardous working conditions, unsafe housing, lack of nutritious food, inequality in accessing justice, and limited access to healthcare.
