Yemen FM on condition of peace in his country. What is it?

In light of the Iran-backed Houthi war and the danger of Houthi rupture of the Yemeni fabric, Yemeni Foreign Minister Ahmed Awad Bin Mubarak stressed Thursday at a press conference in Ankara that the peace project in his country can be achieved if the “Houthis are deterred and there is will.”

During a meeting with US Special Envoy to Iran Robert Malley earlier this month, the Yemeni Foreign Minister reviewed Iran’s destructive role in his country, and pointed to Iranian support for Houthi militias and the continued flow of Iranian arms, especially drones, which exacerbated the crisis in Yemen and threatened peace and security in the region, international navigation and oil supplies.

He added that the targeting of installations and oil tankers in Yemen is carried out through the Iranian marches, explaining that the Houthi militias aim to impose an economic blockade on the Yemeni people, and to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis to serve the Iranian subversive project.

The Yemeni government had welcomed the renewal of the truce in Yemen, which ended on October 2nd, without an extension; due to Houthi demands regarding public-sector salaries.

The Government renewed its commitment to a just and comprehensive peace in accordance with the agreed terms of reference at the national, regional and international levels, and to continue to engage seriously and responsibly with all efforts aimed at alleviating the human suffering of the Yemeni people and achieving their aspirations to restore State institutions.

Since the end of the UN truce, Houthi militias have stepped up attacks on oil ports in Shabwah and Hadramawt governorates in southern Yemen with three drone strikes.

The Houthis believe that exporting oil is the pillaging of the Yemeni people’s wealth by an illegitimate government, a conviction reinforced by the decline in legitimacy on the ground and in political negotiation, after it practically abandoned the legal principles of defining the crisis, which are represented in the Gulf initiative and its executive mechanism, the outputs of the national dialog and the Riyadh Declaration, and Security Council resolutions, especially resolution (2216).
