Zelensky’s Prediction: Ukrainian Air Defenses Repel a Russian Missile Attack
Just days after the Ukrainian president warned of a large-scale Russian offensive, Ukraine’s air defense systems successfully intercepted Russian missiles.
Local officials said that Ukrainian air defense units repelled a Russian missile attack targeting Kyiv on Thursday evening, adding that missile debris fell in at least one area of the capital.
No casualties were reported. However, a Reuters correspondent stated that at least one Russian missile had been intercepted.
Journalists from Agence France-Presse observed trails left by Ukrainian air defense missiles in the skies over the capital and heard explosions as the incoming projectiles were intercepted.
It is unusual for the Russian military to carry out air strikes against Ukraine at this time of day, as such attacks are typically conducted during the night.
Writing on Telegram, Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s Military Administration, said that the air defense forces had “engaged and neutralized the enemy missiles.”
Meanwhile, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that missile debris had fallen in an open area of the Darnytskyi district on the outskirts of the city, causing a fire in a storage facility.
Last week, President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that major attacks against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities were imminent.
A week earlier, Ukraine had launched a large-scale attack on the Russian capital, Moscow, described by Russian military sources quoted by local media as the largest assault in two years.
The Ukrainian attack coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s hosting of several Asian leaders attending the Russia–ASEAN Summit.
Russia continues to conduct near-daily strikes across Ukrainian territory, more than four years after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, while diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a settlement to end the conflict remain deadlocked.
At the same time, Ukraine has intensified its strikes inside Russian territory, including against targets deep within Russia, focusing particularly on fuel transportation and storage facilities in an effort to undermine Moscow’s ability to finance its military operations.
