Yemen calls on Washington to pressure on Houthi to break Taiz siege
Yemeni Foreign Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak stressed the need to pressure Houthi militias to abide by a humanitarian truce and lift the tight siege on Taiz.
This came during a meeting between the Yemeni Foreign Minister, Friday, with the Coordinator of the Middle East and North Africa in the White House, Brett McGurk, as well as the US envoy to Yemen, according to a post published by bin Mubarak on his Twitter account.
According to the Yemeni minister, the meeting discussed the economic and political challenges and the need for the continuation of the truce and in particular the opening of roads in Taiz.
Bin Mubarak stressed to the White House coordinator the need to pressure Houthi militias to implement the provisions of the humanitarian truce supported by the United Nations and Houthi militias to open roads to the city of Taiz, which has been under a tight siege for seven years.
Washington, for its part, reiterated its full support for Yemen and the peace process in the country, which is mired in an eight-year Houthi war.
The intransigent position of the Houthi militia, which refuses to make any concessions to the success of international efforts and actions seeking a peaceful settlement of the war and an end to the coup in Yemen, has not changed.
The UN efforts culminated in a two-month humanitarian truce ending on June 2, 2022. In addition to de-escalating the violence, it included talks to lift the tight siege of Taiz as a humanitarian demand that exacerbates the suffering of millions of Yemenis living in the city.
