Tunisia electoral commission refuses to question referendum results

The head of Tunisia’s Independent High Electoral Commission, Farouk Bouaskar, has refused to question the results of the latest referendum, announcing that he has received three formal appeals.

The three appeals were filed by the Afek Tounes party, the People Wants party and the non-governmental organization I WATCH, Bouaskar said.

However, during a press conference on Tuesday, he clarified that these appeals did not concern the results of the vote, and will not affect the final results of the referendum, which will be announced in the coming days.

He said a number of opposition parties wanted to question the results of the referendum, describing their actions as an unfounded political storm. He said the administrative court will not be able to rule on the cancelation of the referendum after examining the appeals.

Bouaskar said that the 30.5% turnout cannot be considered weak even when compared to the turnout outside Tunisia, calling the calls for recount “absurd”.

The previously announced results were correct and correct.

“It is better for them to question other things, because Tunisia is not one of the countries that will falsify the results of the vote, and we have overcome it since 2011,” he said.

He said the IEC would file cases against anyone who insulted its members, insulted them, or violated their honor. Anyone who accuses the IEC of falsifying the results of the referendum must prove this and be held accountable before the courts.

Skepticism has reached unacceptable levels; He pointed out that the election commission respects freedom of expression, ‘but if this turns into insults, then everyone who has been accused of fraud and suspects will face the courts, either he proves his accusations against us or he faces the judiciary.

On Tuesday, Tunisia held a referendum on the new republic’s constitution.

Farouk Bouaskar, head of the Independent High Electoral Commission, said 94.6% of voters who voted in the referendum on a new constitution had voted in favor.

Of the 9.3 million eligible voters, 2,756,607 participated in the referendum.
