Political and economic solution to Libyan crisis at Biden-Al-Menfi table
To resolve Libya’s crises, Mohamed al-Menfi head of the Presidential Council offered President John Biden the council’s vision for political and economic stabilization.
Libyan President Mohamed al-Menfi held private consultations on Friday with US officials on the sidelines of his participation in the US-Africa Summit in Washington, according to the Information Office of al-Menfi.
The statement of the Information Office of the President of the Libyan Presidential Council said that Mohamed al-Menfi “met with US President Joe Biden during the deliberations of the summit of the leaders of the United States and Africa.
The Libyan President also held consultations with member of the US Congress Armed Forces Committee, John Garamindi, and another meeting with Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.
At the three meetings, Mohamed al-Menfi discussed “ways of achieving stability in Libya and the Presidential Council’s vision for a solution on the political and economic fronts,” the statement said.
The President of the Libyan Presidential Council confirmed that “US President Joe Biden expressed his country’s commitment to supporting the stability of Libya and the success of the peaceful transfer of power.”
In the same statement, Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, affirmed that “the United States attaches importance to the Libyan issue and supports peace and security-building efforts in this country”.
Presidential Steps for Resolution
In preparation for the launch of a comprehensive national reconciliation project, Libya’s Presidential Council seeks to resolve a political crisis in the country that is characterized by a power struggle between the first two governments – the government of Fathi Bashagha, recently appointed by the House of Representatives.
The second is the outgoing government of national unity, headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, who refuses to hand over power except to a government that comes through a new parliament chosen by the people through a future election that the country has not yet succeeded in reaching.
In parallel with its efforts to resolve the crisis through the national reconciliation project, the Libyan Presidential Council also announced last week another initiative with the same goal of bringing together the three Libyan councils (the Presidential Council, the House of Representatives and the so-called State Consultative Council) in a meeting under the auspices of UN envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily.
The Presidential Council’s new initiative aims to resolve the dispute that led to the suspension of UN efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis and hold elections based on a constitutional rule agreed by the House of Representatives and the State Council.
