Thousands of Yemeni women are subjected to torture and abuse in Houthi prisons.. Details

Over the past few years, the Houthi militia has imposed a series of restrictions and imposed measures that have constituted a suffocating blockade on women in areas under its control. The most prominent of these restrictions are preventing women from traveling and moving without a “mahram” (male relative male relative) and tightening measures at Sanaa’s land and air ports to implement this measure.

Houthi Prisons

A human rights center revealed that the Houthi terrorist militia is abducting thousands of Yemeni women in its prisons who are subjected to torture and sexual assault, describing the situation of women in Yemen as “harsh reality”.

It is important to acknowledge the harsh reality of thousands of women currently imprisoned by the Houthi group, tortured and sexually assaulted, and in addition, many displaced women with their children are struggling to meet their basic requirements, including access to clean water and adequate food, the U.S. Center for Justice said in a statement.

“The Houthi coup led to the opening of prisons, jailing thousands of women and subjecting them to torture, rape and fabrication of arbitrary and malicious charges,” the center said. “It does not stop with the confiscation of dignity and freedom under the control of a militia that does not recognize rights and freedoms.

Torture and abuse

Dr. Abdulkarim Al-Ansi, a human rights activist and director of Yemen First, says the Houthi militia continues to terrorize women detainees through physical torture, beatings with sticks, electric wires, electric shocks, stop breathing by suffocation, humiliation, verbal torture and vilification, slapping and being forced to confess to charges that have not been committed.

He added that the Houthi violations against women have multiplied, including killings, abductions, torture, verbal, physical and sexual abuse, in addition to preventing them from communicating with their families to inform them of their detention, and preventing them from being released without paying large sums of money, and pledging not to participate in any required event.

He called on the international community to put pressure on the Houthi militia to immediately and unconditionally release women detainees and disappeared, stop all violations against women, and include the Houthi militia on the list of terrorist organizations for their involvement in committing crimes and grave violations against women and children.
