The military intelligence services of the Sudanese army, dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, are attempting to assert control over the media by conducting a census of journalists in the states they control.

According to Al-Rakoba, citing media sources, the devastating conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023 has led to the shutdown and destruction of media institutions’ headquarters across the country, including both public and private outlets.

Journalists reported that military intelligence, affiliated with the Islamic movement, is currently conducting a census and classification of journalists in the states of the Nile, the North, the Red Sea, Kassala, and Al-Gedaref.

Journalists confirmed that they received calls from intelligence officers asking them to register their names in new lists prepared by the “dissolved” Union of Journalists in the local governments’ headquarters in their states, to make it easier to monitor media content shared via media outlets and social networks.

The Sudanese Journalists’ Syndicate regularly reports that Sudanese journalists have faced widespread violations during the ongoing war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has led to the death and injury of several journalists, the closure of media institutions, the destruction of journalists’ offices and homes, and subjected them to persecution, accusations, and travel bans.
