After 13 Years… Syria Regains Its Seat at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation

Syria has announced the restoration of its membership in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) after 13 years of suspension.

In a statement, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that the OIC had decided to reinstate Syria’s membership following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

The statement, relayed by the official Syrian news agency, welcomed the decision, describing it as a significant step toward Syria’s return to the regional and international communities as a free and just state.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Syria’s unwavering commitment to the principles of the OIC and its readiness to work alongside Islamic nations to rebuild Syria and strengthen the region based on shared values of justice, peace, and cooperation.

It also expressed its aspiration for a future in which the Syrian people regain their rightful place among nations, contributing to a stronger and more united Islamic world.

OIC foreign ministers held an emergency meeting on Friday evening in Jeddah to discuss the situation in Gaza. A Turkish diplomatic source stated that Syria had regained its membership in the organization after a 13-year suspension.

According to a source cited by Reuters, the initiative proposed by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to reinstate Syria’s OIC membership was accepted, after the organization had decided in August 2012 to suspend Syria’s participation in its meetings.

The source added that Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan Al-Shaibani was invited to the meeting to take Syria’s seat following a vote.

OIC members applauded as the Syrian minister entered the hall.
