For the First Time North Korea Acknowledges Deployment of Troops in Russia

North Korea has confirmed for the first time that it has sent forces to Russia, stating that its soldiers helped Moscow recapture areas in the Kursk region that had been under Ukrainian control for months.

According to North Korea’s official news agency on Monday, “subordinate units” of the North Korean “armed forces” “participated in operations to liberate areas of Kursk” in Russia, emphasizing that the military efforts of these forces “were crowned with success.”

This announcement came just hours after Russia’s Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, praised the participation of North Korean soldiers in repelling the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region, highlighting their “resilience and heroism,” according to Military Watch magazine.

Gerasimov stated, “I would especially like to acknowledge the participation of Choson soldiers in liberating the border region of Kursk, where they provided significant support in defeating the Ukrainian army, in accordance with the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement (Tactical Partnership Treaty) between the two countries… Choson soldiers and officers carried out their combat missions alongside Russian troops, demonstrating high professionalism, strength, courage, and heroism during the escalation of operations against Ukraine.”

Following these statements, Russia’s state-run channel RT published an article titled: “Not a Single North Korean Betrayed His Oath: How Our Allies Helped Liberate Kursk,” confirming that North Korean army units “displayed high discipline, excellent coordination, and a disregard for death, which greatly contributed to the defeat of Ukrainian forces.”

Providing further details about North Korean units’ operations in Kursk, Russian media reported that North Korean soldiers first underwent military training on Russian grounds, where they learned modern combat tactics, operated drones, and adapted to field conditions.

After training, the North Korean soldiers were transferred to the Kursk region, where they lived in field conditions to avoid drawing attention. They initially manned the third line of defense, then the second, and ultimately participated in fortified defenses and direct assaults.
